August 16, 2020

Probably everyone from around 10 to 12 years old and older immediately understands what the title of this post refers to.

Several years ago, professional football players that had some sort of grievance with America would kneel on a knee rather than stand up straight and salute the American flag while the National Anthem was being played before the beginning of a game.

This act of defiance against our country made many patriotic football fans very upset over their using a game for political purposes. Many owners of these football franchises became aware of how this act of kneeling was upsetting patriotic fans. And this leads me into telling you what the inspiration for this post was.

This past Friday morning (August 14) as I was reading my local newspaper, I caught the headline on an article in the sports section. I generally skip reading anything in the sports section at all, but this headline induced me to read the article. Here is the exact headline: JONES HINTS THERE’S WIGGLE ROOM OVER HIS ANTHEM POLICY.  It was an AP written story so it was probably printed in newspapers of any size all over the country.

Many of you probably know that this article referred to a statement that Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, made a few years ago over the unpopularity of some players in the NFL taking a knee during the playing of the National Anthem. I don’t have much respect for Jones anyway, but he was smart enough to know this kneeling would reflect badly on “America’s Team.”

So Jones announced publicly that he had told all his players that they WOULD stand “toe on the line” during the playing of the National Anthem.

But over the course of the past few years, more and more players have started kneeling during the playing of the anthem from all NFL teams.

Jones saw trouble ahead with his relationship with his players. So he is hinting now that he is going to crawfish on his statement that all players WOULD stand. His statement now is that he does not want any of his players to be upset over what they want to protest about (mostly racism). He wants them all to be happy.  At one point since his original statement, he knelt with his players.

Since I can not say this personally to Jones, I will state in this post what I WOULD say to him face to face if I had the opportunity. I would say, “Mr. Jones, you are a bald-faced hypocrite. You know that you don’t care about how any of your players feel. You only want to appease them so that they will not go on strike, or quit your team outright. If there was a walk-out of your players there could be no games and your purse would not keep getting fatter and fatter.”

Unfortunately, this is the mindset of all the owners of professional sports teams, including basketball and other sports. The owners will continue to compromise their integrity and patriotism in any way possible to keep rolling in dollars.

I saw all this coming over 30 years ago and have not watched a sports game of any kind. I refuse to be a part of idolizing these high paid athletes just because they excel in a God-given gift. Most of these athletes have gotten so caught up in greed and self-worth that it makes me sick.

Of course, at nearly 72 years of age, I have learned through experience and observation, that sports has become another substitute for worshipping God.

Recently with everything going on worldwide, I have had many people ask me if I thought we were living in the “last days” as foretold in the Bible. This question is of concern to both young and old. My answer is,” Yes, I do believe we are beginning to see things happen that The Bible tells us will happen in “the last days.”

One thing is the scripture that says that in the last day’s men shall be lovers of their own selves…lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.  (2 Timothy 3: 2-4). In that same passage of scripture, we also read that in the last days perilous (dangerous) times shall come.

Can anyone doubt that we are in such a time like this, right now?

I could write at great length about this topic, but you know I like to keep my post’s short and to-the-point so that more people will take time to read them.

But in all love, I want to close with this admonition: Wake up world and see that the end is near; repent.

God Bless You,
Spencer Plumley
