3 Minute Read
NOTE: This is a “Classic Edition.” or a “Rerun,” but well worth refreshing your memory!
Today, most Christian Churches will be celebrating Pentecost Sunday. But just what is it, and why is it so important?
Pentecost Sunday occurs 50 days after Easter. It’s a special day marking the beginning of the Church.
Jesus had told his followers 10 days earlier (during His ascension), to wait in Jerusalem until they received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which would give them power. His followers would be in Jerusalem anyway celebrating the Feast of Weeks.
One can read all about this special day in the Book of Acts, 2:1-13. Churches that employ paraments in their worship services will have the color red on display, representing the tongues of fire that fell on believers that day.
The most important thing to remember on Pentecost Sunday, is that the followers were told that power would fall on them and that they would be able to to great things. That meant every believer.
The Holy Spirit, being a third part of the Holy Trinity, has always been present. He was there when God said, “Let us make man in our own image.”
Often, in the Old Testament, The Holy Spirit showed up, obviously just at certain times, such as when a prophet, priest or king needed special anointing and power.
We see the strength of the Holy Spirit when Samson wielded supernatural strength; when David killed lions and bears, and certainly when David challenged Goliath and won. And what about the shutting of the lions’ mouths when Daniel was thrown into the den with them? Then with Gideon, and I believe with Job, too, to help him face great trials and suffering without ever doubting God. I could name many more instances of the Holy Spirit being there to help people at the right place and the right time.
Pentecost Sunday has always been a day of great celebration for Sandra and me. But this Pentecost Sunday is especially important to us because of another reason. I won’t take time today to point out just why, but I will soon. I don’t have time today and want to tell you all about why later. But it will take a whole blog post to do so.
Please take time to celebrate this special day. And try to understand why it is so important to all believers until Jesus comes again.
God Bless You,
